Arabic (اَلْعَرَبِيَّةُ, al-ʿarabiyyah ) is one of the largest languages other than English spoken in Australia. Over 200,000 Arabic speakers in NSW and 30,000 school students in NSW identifying as Arabic background speakers. Arabic is a Semitic language that originated in the 1st to 4th centuries CE. Arabic and its dialects are spoken by around 422 million speakers making it one of the five most spoken languages in the world. Currently, 25 countries claim Arabic as an official or co-official language including Saudi Arabia, Chad, Algeria, Comoros, Eritrea, Djibouti, Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Kuwait, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Bahrain, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.
